How did Schmid Motorsport begin its journey?
Every team has a story, and we wanted to understand how Schmid Motorsport found its way into the BMW 318ti Cup. We wanted to learning about a team’s origins often tells us a lot about the championship itself.

Can you tell me about the history of Schmid Motorsport and how it got to the BMW 318ti Cup?
Niklas Schmid
Schmid Motorsport is a family team that competes in partnership with KTW4 Racing. Before the 318ti Cup, we had no circuit racing experience, only experience in karting and car slalom. We began competing in the 318ti Cup in 2022. That year I drove my first season with Konrad Motorsport. The following season, we fielded our own car and competed in both the 318ti Cup and the BMW Challenge. Last season, we entered two cars in the 318ti Cup, one driven by my brother Marius and one by me.

Depending on the level of detail involved in building a 318ti and how labor costs are calculated, the price ranges from €20,000 to €30,000. Used 318ti Cup cars are available online starting at €20,000.

The biggest cost items for a race weekend are likely the entry fee and the team mechanics. Of course, an accident could result in even higher costs.

From the outside, it may just look like a wall of BMWs, all looking the same. But we wanted to understand what keeps drivers coming back every season and why this championship enjoys such a loyal following.

In your opinion, what makes the BMW 318ti Cup such an enjoyable championship to compete in?
Niklas Schmid
For me, the 318ti Cup is such a great racing series because so many identical cars compete against each other, allowing you to measure yourself against other drivers, and it largely depends on the driver.

Do you think this championship is a good stepping stone into the world of GT racing? If so, why?

Yes, I think the 318ti Cup is a good entry point into GT racing, as it is cost-effective compared to other series and offers a great opportunity to learn how to battle wheel-to-wheel with other cars. Furthermore, there aren’t many avenues for young talents moving up from karting to start a career in car racing, which makes the 318ti Cup very important.

Why don’t we consider this one of the most enlightening revelations of the interview? Niklas points out the educational aspect of the championship, instead of merely concentrating on the outcome of the championship.
Actually, considering education as the final goal of motorsport events, it is not a surprise that the BMW 318ti Cup perfectly bridges karting and GT racing because it provides a good opportunity of acquiring racecraft skills at a reasonable price.
How much should a driver budget for a full season?
This is probably the question every aspiring racing driver wants answered. Understanding the approximate cost of the whole season gives a much clearer picture of how affordable the championship really is.

If someone wanted to enter the BMW 318ti Cup next season as a driver, what budget should they realistically expect for a full season?
Niklas Schmid
If you want to race a full season with a team, you should budget around €50,000. Of course, if you compete in your own vehicle or share the car, you can get by with less.

The sum of €50,000 is still a lot of money to invest, but it is very competitive compared to many modern racing categories.
Niklas adds that costs can be lowered significantly by running your own car or sharing it with another driver, making the championship even more affordable.
Is money the biggest challenge for a newcomer?
A lot of people think that the toughest part of getting into motorsport is coming up with the money.
Once drivers overcome the financial challenge, they often face the real test on track. We asked Niklas what he believes is the biggest obstacle for someone making their debut in the BMW 318ti Cup.

Besides the budget, what do you think is the biggest challenge for someone entering the championship for the first time?
Niklas Schmid
The field in the 318ti Cup is highly competitive, and even professional race car drivers cannot simply jump in and run at the front. In my opinion, the biggest challenge for young drivers is quickly getting to grips with the car and the necessary driving style in order to keep pace with the rest of the field. Furthermore, a certain level of physical fitness is essential when driving a car like this, which lacks air conditioning, in hot weather.

Niklas’ answer highlights something that is often overlooked. The BMW 318ti Cup might be one of the cheapest ways into circuit racing, but cheap doesn’t mean simple. With more than 40 cars driving with only a few tenths of a second separating them, adapting to the driving style and maintaining consistency becomes essential. He also says about the importance of physical preparation, particularly on hot summer race weekends when drivers are forced to compete without the benefit of air conditioning.
